In the Vedic society, women had the same status as men in all aspects of life. Following the influence of changing rulers in the medieval period from the Mughal empire, the Rajputs, and the formation of the caste system, the standing of women deteriorated. The Center’s Safe Women, Strong Nations project partners with Native women’s organizations and Indian and Alaska Native nations to end violence against Native women and girls. Statistics define the scale of the problem, but do nothing to convey the experience of the epidemic. They tell part of the story, but fail to account for the devastating impacts this violence has on the survivors, Indian families, Native communities, and Indian nations themselves. Another job in which Indian women are doing so well is that of teachers. In country like India where millions are groping in the darkness of illiteracy and ignorance efficient teaching to the children is most urgently needed. By virtue of their love and affection for the children the women have proved the best teachers in the primary and kindergarten schools. They can better understand the psychology of a child than the male teachers.

Whereas women in other countries often withdraw from the workforce when burdened with a child, women in India drop out when burdened with a husband. Women, but not men, have to pay to urinate in Mumbai, despite regulations against this practice. Thus, activists have collected more than 50,000 signatures supporting their demands that the local government stop charging women to urinate, build more toilets, keep them clean, provide sanitary napkins and a trash can, and hire female attendants. In response, city officials have agreed to build hundreds of public toilets for women in Mumbai, and some local legislators are now promising to build toilets for women in every one of their districts. In rural areas, schools have been reported to have gained the improved sanitation facility.

Survivors of sexual violence cannot be blamed for the trauma and pain inflicted upon them. As a community, we must educate ourselves and rise up to hold harm-doers accountable and interrupt all forms of violence. It is time to stop holding the survivors of sexual violence accountable for the trauma and pain inflicted upon them. Representation across different sports is not the only encouraging sign. What makes this year’s women contingent more appealing is the diversity in it.

Out of the economic wreckage, arranged marriages may also increase, experts say, with families seeing these unions as a way to secure their daughters’ futures. It’s becoming more and more acceptable for women to not only work, but to have careers, and even sometimes be the sole earner for the family.
